Jimmy John’s Gourmet Sandwiches was founded by Jimmy John Liautaud in 1983 after he graduated from Elgin Academy. He opened the first Jimmy John’s in a garage in Charleston, Illinois, with used equipment and no menu or advertisement, just a few sandwiches and sodas. But by 1985 and success with his sandwiches, Liautaud bought out his father’s interest in the business and opened a second store in Macomb, Illinois, then several more stores in the state before offering franchising in 1993.
