Yum Yum Donuts was started in 1971 by Philip C. Holland, who converted an Orange Julius shop in Highland Park, California, a shop that continues to perform at the highest volume in the Yum Yum chain. Holland expanded to three shops by 1973 and was looking to grow more. By 2004, with nearly 70 donut shops in operation, Yum Yum Donuts purchased Winchell’s Donuts, one of the largest donut chains on the West Coast. Those shops have retained Winchell’s name, with Yum Yum management.
