Members come to us from all walks of life, from the stay at home mom to the full time business traveler, our workouts are designed to keep our clients engaged and excited about fitness every single day. Everyone enters HEW on their 5-Week Navy S.E.A.L. boot camp. It is intimidating at first, but the HEW Coaches help all members by scaling workouts to their level, helping them achieve their personal fitness goals.

Each HEW offers the following services to an average of 250 members daily (except Sundays of course!):

  • 30 minute workouts between 6 am – 7 pm
  • Nutritional plans using the NuFit System
  • Trained and experienced coaches
  • Community involvement opportunities
  • Branded merchandise and fitness aides

Each member pays an average of $150 per month and everyone starts at HEW 5-week intensive boot camp, which includes personalized attention and a plan for each member to achieve quick results. An average of 70% of boot camp attendees become members. With a goal of 30 new boot camps per month, our locations have a plan for success to attaining new members.

Matt Hunt and Randall Greer founded Hard Exercise Works in Jupiter, FL in 2009 and today, the franchise has 16 locations in Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina.

Who is HEW?

****The growth of high-intensity interval training inside smaller local gyms is sweeping the nation. Most have heard of CrossFit, but Hard Exercise Works is challenging the model with its model for superior coaching, more flexible modifications to accommodate any member, and cleaner facilities. Our brand stands out in every community we touch. The social media alone tells the strength in the brand with already over 14,000 combined likes on Facebook and more than 15,000 Instagram results for #hardexerciseworks and #hew.

A select committee who has been educated in programming plans workouts and every HEW participates in the same daily workout, further contributing to the competitiveness and social sharing of HEW members in social media.

How do HEW (you) achieve success?

*Members pay an average of $150 per month and attend 4-5 classes per week. Each location holds 10 daily classes on weekdays and 2 classes Saturday mornings. Additional revenues can be earned from products sold inside the gym including cleverly branded t-shirts, jump ropes, wrist wraps, protein powders and supplements. T-shirts usually sell out within 3 days of being retailed and are immensely popular with customers because of their social clout. Revenue generating services include specialty short-term clubs and NuFit*™ nutritional program can also be earned. For mature gyms, franchisees can expect to earn 10-15% from these ancillary products and services.

The average HEW needs 3 FT employees on staff outside of the owners to start and our mature locations have an average of 9 employee coaches. After a location is up and running, a working owner can expect to spend 30 hours per week running and coaching at their location.

Our proprietary software system automates all the processes for signing members up, email communication, and membership billing. Also, because of our system, members can enjoy the benefits of visiting other gyms if they are unable to get to their home gym. This added feature is a strong selling point in terms of membership. Because of the length and flexibility in our classes, the gym is very appealing to parents and even kids who want to get fit at an early age.

Location Planning

Each location is about 5,000 sq feet and can accommodate class sizes up to 60 members. We carefully plan locations in areas where all or part of our workouts can be seen to passersby. Because of the group nature of the workout, having a group of 30 people running outside naturally draws attention. Many of our first-time boot camps are generated from the curiosity of those driving or walking by HEW.

During your location planning, we will provide you with demographic studies, traffic flow patterns and an Ideal Spot Analysis. Our job is to make sure we set you up for success by helping you negotiate your lease terms and build out plan. After your lease is signed, the process of opening usually takes about 10 weeks.

The standard HEW equipment package is by no means standard! It includes everything you will need for success including medicine balls, Olympic branded weights and weight lifting bars, kettle bells, ab mats, ab rollers, climbing ropes, plyo boxes, assistance bands, gymnastics rings, rowing machines, dumbbells, hurdles and of course, tires! The atmosphere is energetic and our workouts are always accompanied by loud music and a time clock to get people moving. Our members compete for PRs (personal records) to achieve their own success and come back for more each day. The exercise equipment has an expected useful life average of 10 years.

More than a gym, HEW is a community of people who are achieving their personal goals together. Our owners love to host social events outside of the gym such as beach WODs, park barbecues, and local charity fundraising events. The HEW brand goes beyond the walls of the gym. Every year, we host HEWPLA (formerly known as Battle of the Boxes) in South Florida as an opportunity for all our HEW members to compete with one another. Scaled and age specific divisions level the playing field for anyone to participate.

All franchisees participate in a 3-week intensive training with the first 2 weeks in sunny South Florida where it all started in a town called Jupiter. The 3rd week is spent at your location where we come out and help you put it all in place. A combination of sales training, administration, operations, and of course, coaching will be taught.

After your training is complete, we provide you grand opening assistance and ongoing bi-weekly follow up during your first year. We don’t expect you to be an expert right away and that’s why we go the extra mile to help our owners achieve success.

Marketing & Support

Our marketing philosophy is to use the brand as much as possible- our members are proud to be committed to their HEW and they aren’t afraid to show it. From window graphics to shirts, almost every member brazens the HEW logo in their community. Our local marketing program is structured around local print and social media. Every day workouts are posted online and on facebook and each location creates their own community facebook page to reach out to their own HEW members for events, promotions and many other social aspects relating to their gym.

Although we have members of all shapes, sizes, and ages, the ideal demographic of our new clients ( roughly 60%) are females in their thirties and are an average of 20 lbs overweight.

The home office offers ongoing support to you in the form of daily operations including cleaning schedules and daily workouts, instructional videos, sales promotions, and coaching techniques.

Franchisee Characteristics

Owners are naturally fitness fanatics and it is necessary to be physically in shape if you plan on being a working owner operator. A husband and wife team operates most of our HEW locations, although we do have successful single gym owners. Absentee ownership is possible and can be discussed further.

The most important characteristics of all our owners are as follows:

  • A passion for fitness and to increase strength and confidence in the lives you touch
  • An appreciation for systems and following a plan
  • A desire to coach, instruct, AND lead clients
  • A servant attitude
  • A background in sales and marketing is extremely helpful
