Hot spots may be found in cafes, hotels, airports and other public areas, The transmitting antenna is usually linked to a land-based Internet connection.

Jupiter Research projects about 5 million people in the U.S. are using WiFi and by 2004 predicts over 28 million while there will be over 10,000 WiFi “hotspots” in the USA and 25,000 worldwide by the end of 2003. Several locations that have ‘Hotspots’ include Starbucks, Borders, Kinko’s, McDonalds and major airports and hotels mostly in waiting areas and lobbies. Cisco is designing a system that will allow users to surf the net while on a plane. Rental prices range $2.99 for 15 minutes to $29.99 for unlimited use or $49.99 for a month.
