Officially called The Body Shop International plc, The Body Shop, a subsidiary of L’Oreal SA, is headquartered in London, but has operations in Canada, Australia, and the United States. The Body Shop Franchise Opportunities – History

The Body Shop was founded in the early 1970s by Anita Roddick when she visited a shop with that name in Berkeley, California selling naturally scented soaps and lotions. Roddick returned to the UK, where she was from, and opened her own Body Shop after purchasing the naming rights from the Berkeley company. Roddick’s Body Shop company grew quickly from its first opening until it was absorbed by L’Oreal in 2006 for 652.3 British pounds. Roddick died in 2007.
