New technology called Wireless Fidelity or WiFi is changing the way the Internet is being delivered to the public from bulky stand alone Internet terminals to portable hand held devices like Personal Digital Assistant’s (PDA) and laptops.

WiFi technology lets laptop and PDA users use radio frequencies to make high speed wireless connections to the Internet. Laptops and other wireless devices use a special antenna to communicate with “hot spots” – areas that have a wireless Internet signal – with a radius of 300 feet. Hot spots may be found in cafes, hotels, airports and other public areas, The transmitting antenna is usually linked to a land-based Internet connection.

Jupiter Research projects about 5 million people in the U.S. are using WiFi and by 2004 predicts over 28 million while there will be over 10,000 WiFi “hotspots” in the USA and 25,000 worldwide by the end of 2003. Research firm Gartner predicts by 2006 there will be 89,000 public WiFi access points and more than 99 million WiFi users worldwide.

Several locations that have ‘Hotspots’ include Starbucks, Borders, Kinko’s, McDonalds and major airports and hotels mostly in waiting areas and lobbies. Cisco is designing a system that will allow users to surf the net while on a plane. Rental prices range $2.99 for 15 minutes to $29.99 for unlimited use or $49.99 for a month.

Largest WiFi network providers that install and operate WiFi networks and operating retail stores include: T-Mobile (Starbucks –2,300, Borders – 400, some airports), Wayport (500 hotels, Airports, McDonalds - 300), STSN (mostly Marriott’s), Toshiba (McDonalds, UPS Stores, Flying J Truck Stops - 165), and Stay Online (hotels).
