TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® began in the early 1980s with brothers Jon Sorber and Brig Sorber, and a ‘66 Ford pickup truck. Over time, Jon, Brig, their mom, Mary Ellen Sheets, and sister Melanie Bergeron, worked endlessly to grow the family business. They understood that you could build a successful business while taking care of the people you serviced along with your community. Today, the widely respected company has more than 330 locations worldwide, 2,100 trucks on the road, 8,000 employees during peak season, and performed its five millionth move June 2014. We are a company built on Core Values that permeate the entire franchise system.
Over the years we’ve learned a lot about what it takes to make a franchise thrive. We serve both home and business customers daily, and offer a range of services including packing services, and the sale of moving supplies at franchise locations. These services contribute to customer satisfaction - and they provide additional revenue opportunities for your franchise.
Today, as the nation’s largest franchised local moving company, we’ve set our sights on continued growth and innovation, while remaining rooted to our core principle: exceeding customers’ expectations in quality and value – every time.
TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® started in the early 1980s as a way for two brothers to make extra money while they were in high school. Now, nearly 30 years later, the company has grown to more than 330 locations worldwide.
Brothers Brig Sorber and Jon Sorber started moving people in the Lansing area using a ‘66 Ford pickup truck. They had their mom, Mary Ellen Sheets, develop a logo to put in a weekly community newspaper. That stick-men logo still rests on every truck, sign, and advertisement.
After the brothers left for college, Sheets continued to field calls for moving services while she also worked a full-time data processing job with the State of Michigan. In 1985, she decided to make things official by purchasing a 14-foot truck for $350 and hiring a pair of movers. That $350 is the only capital Sheets has ever invested in the company.
Her experience with data analysis, combined with her commitment to customer service, earned her a spot on a 1988 graduate business panel at Michigan State University. When a fellow panelist suggested she franchise her little company, Sheets decided to consult with an attorney on the matter.
In 1989, Sheets awarded the first location outside of Michigan to her daughter, Melanie Bergeron. The office was in Atlanta, Ga.
When the company reached 39 franchises, Sheets asked Bergeron to assume the role of company president while she pursued a seat in the Michigan State Senate. Today, Bergeron is chair of the board.
Brig and Jon Sorber eventually returned to team up with their mom and older sister in the mid-1990s. Brig Sorber now serves as the chief executive officer, and Jon Sorber is executive vice president.
In August 2012, former Chief Operating Officer Randy Shacka was promoted to president of TWO MEN AND A TRUCK®. Randy joined the team in 2001 as an intern and has since held several roles, including Franchise Development Specialist, Director of Operations, Chief Development Officer (CDO) and Chief Operating Officer (COO). This marks the first time in the history of the company the title of President has been held by a person outside of the founding family.
That first truck Sheets bought in 1985 has now multiplied into a fleet of more than 2,100 trucks. TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® is the nation's largest franchised local moving company. Customers benefit from having trained, uniformed movers who are insured and bonded to handle any home move and business moving tasks.
The company has come a long way – and logged a lot of miles – since Sheets sketched the first "stick-men." The TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® system continues to pave the way for future growth and innovation, while remaining rooted in the core principles of exceeding customers' expectations.

“You can’t build your business from the back of a truck.”
This has become the mantra of our most successful franchisees through the U.S.—and they’re correct! The ingredients of a thriving TWO MEN AND A TRUCK® franchise include trustworthy management/mover/driver teams, a solid online lead generation plan and, most of all, consistent quality customer service that extends from move-booking and estimating to moving the last item into a new home.
So, now that you know franchisees work on growing the business much the way traditional businesses achieve success, it’s time to learn more.
How big is the market for moving services? According to the U.S. Census, on average, 14 percent of the population moves every year. This figure doesn’t include business moves or the growing demand for manpower to move a limited number of items within homes and offices. The growth in locations (more than 330) and trucks (2,100) across the nation and abroad is a testament to the fact that a moving franchise is recession-proof and is a contributor to the economy’s job creation (8,000 employees).
We consider our brand, well, kind of a big deal for a company that began literally with two men and a truck. We are recognized in both the moving and franchise industries as leaders because of our dynamic growth and the way we build our business. Franchisees play a large role in the growth and contribute greatly to this recognition.
Some of our recent awards include the following:
