Franchise Fridays for July 22, 2011: Top Franchise and Small Business News of the Week
Tennis Legend Caught Juicin'
Superstar tennis player Venus Williams just got a new doubles partner. The Jamba Juice franchise is teaming up with Williams to help promote living a healthy and active lifestyle. Williams will be the official spokesperson for the franchise, which continues to successfully compete with the ever-growing fro-yo market that eats up a big chunk of the cold dessert market. “My goal is to help inspire our nation’s youth to become more active and to make better dietary choices," said Williams. "Jamba Juice is a perfect fit to help me in that endeavor.”
Jamba Juice offers its customers 22 iced beverages containing 250 calories or less. Included in these low-calorie options are drinks which contain natural fruits and vegetables, electrolytes and probiotics from yogurt -- and a whole lot of refreshment and happiness.

Delicious & Diverse Yum! Brands Inc.
July 2011 marks the seventh installment of Black Enterprise magazine's annual award for the most diversity-friendly companies. Yum! Brands Inc. has been named to the list in each of its 7 years. The list takes into account the top 1,000 public U.S. companies and 100 leading global companies with significant operations within the U.S.. The selections were based on the number of ethnic minority groups in supplier diversity, senior management, Board of Directors and total employee base.
David Novak, chairman and CEO, Yum! Brands Inc., says that it means a lot to him and his company to be honored for their dedication to maintaining a fair and diverse workplace. "This only motivates us to work even harder to create a 'Famous Recognition Culture Where Everyone Counts,'" he said. Over half of the company's total workforce is made up by minority workers.

More Meals on Wheels
A recent study by Chicago-based research firm Tehnomic shows that consumers like their food on wheels. The study found that 91 percent of survey respondents felt that the food truck fad is good and here to stay. However, it should be noted that there is still a significant portion of the country that knows nothing of the existence of the food wagon phenomenon. And of that group, seventy percent is hesitant to purchase food from a vehicle. This could be a large barrier to growth in this industry. Still, some bigger restaurant franchises, such as the Sizzler franchise, Gold Star Chili franchise, Qdoba Mexican Grill franchise and Dairy Queen franchise participate in providing meals on wheels.

Happy Ice Cream Month!
The last thing most Americans need is an excuse to eat more ice cream this summer. But thanks anyway, Friendly's, for the extra incentive! To celebrate, the Friendly's franchise served up, along with its famous ice cream, fun facts about its heaven-sent cold desserts. Popeye's Chicken Celebrates 2k
The Popeye's Louisiana Chicken franchise just opened its 2,000th location, and it celebrated the way any self-respecting quick-serve chicken chain would -- by (you guessed it) giving out free chicken! The new Popeye's located in Southeast Memphis played host last Saturday to a huge crowd of hungry people looking to celebrate with the franchise. Popeye's was founded in 1972, and is still experiencing some nice growth within the quick-serve industry. The company reported earnings of $1.2 million per average unit volume, a $300,000 increase over 2008. It credits its data-driven focus for its improved results.
